Owens Valley: Alabama Hills, Whitney Portal, and Horseshoe Meadow, October 5, 2008

On Sunday, October 5, I shot a series of panoramas with my Gigapan robotic camera mount in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, and up at Horshoe Meadow in the Sierra nevada.

Mount Whitney and the Whitney Portal Road. Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the continental United States with an elevation of 14,497 feet. The Whitney Portal Road was made famous in the climactic chase scene at the end of the Humphrey Bogart movie High sierra.

Tuttle Creek Road runs through the Alabama Hills. Parts of the movie Tremors were filmed along the road.

Horseshoe Meadow is perched at 10,000 feet elevation in the Sierra Nevada.

Horseshoe Meadow fisheye view has a field of view of about 240 degrees.

The Inyo Mountains form the backdrop for this sunset view from Horseshoe Meadow Road at an elevation of 8,400 feet in the Sierra Nevada, high above Lone Pine and Owens Lake.

Death Valley National Park: Lee Flat, Racetrack Playa, and Ubehebe Crater, October 6, 2008

On Monday, October 6, I drove across Lee Flat, over Hunter Mountain, through Ulida Flat and Hidden Valley, via Teakettle Junction to Racetrack Playa.

Lee Flat sits between the Inyo Mountains and the Nelson Range on the western edge of Death Valley National Park. It is home to a relatively dense Joshua Tree forest.

Death Valley lies on the far side of Hidden Valley.

Death Valley is visible from the north side of Hunter Mountain.

Racetrack Playa and the Grandstand. The Grandstand is an outcrop of rock in the middle of Racetrack Playa, where the rocks move when nobody is watching.

At the Racetrack I ran into a German couple in a sedan who wanted to know if the road came out on a highway nearby.

Racetrack Playa was a potential emergency landing site for the North American X-15 rocket plane.

Then I cruised through Racetrack Valley, past Dry Mountain to Ubehebe Crater.

Ubehebe Crater is a phreato-magmatic explosion crater, the result of hot magma heating ground water and triggering a steam explosion about 1,000 years ago.

It was 98 degrees as I pulled into Furnace Creek Ranch and checked into my cabin. A vintage motorcycle club was gathered at the Ranch along with many German tourists.

We stayed in these cabins.

There is a set of borax wagons on display at Furnace Creek Ranch.

The atmosphere was hazy on Tuesday, so I abandoned my plans to shoot more panoramas in the Panamint Mountains and headed straight home.

A dozen photos of the Saline and Panamint Valleys. The Saline Valley is a remote and beautiful part of Death Valley National Park. The primitive roads and utter lack of services make it one of the least visited parts of the park. I strongly recommend 4-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicles to get there. We get a flat tire on nearly every trip. The Saline Valley is bounded on the west by the Inyo Mountains with peaks reaching over 11,000 feet. The bottom of the valley floor is at an elevation two miles below the peaks of the Inyos. The lowest pass out of the valley is almost 4,000 feet higher than the almost dry lakebed.
